SDMS Foundation Announces 2009 Scholarship Program Recipients
October 9, 2009
The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) Foundation's Board of Directors
is pleased to announce the 2009 SDMS Foundation Scholarship Program recipients.
The SDMS Foundation’s scholarship program provides a $2,500 scholarship to a deserving
sonography student just beginning their career in diagnostic medical sonography.
Another $2,500 scholarship is awarded to a deserving experienced sonographer who
is continuing their education by pursuing an advanced sonography-related degree.
Judene Manger from Islip, New York is the first 2009 SDMS Foundation scholarship
recipient. Ms. Manger is enrolled in the Western Suffolk BOCES School of Diagnostic
Medical Sonography in Northport, New York. The accredited program offers a 24-month
certificate program and Ms. Manger will graduate in June 2010.
Tammy Stearns from Ozark, Missouri is the second recipient of a 2009 SDMS Foundation
scholarship. Ms. Stearns is enrolled in the Missouri State University Master’s in
Administrative Studies program and will graduate in December 2010. Ms. Stearns is
the program director for Cox Health System’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program
in Springfield, Missouri and is a member of the SDMS Government Affairs Committee.
The SDMS Foundation received more than fifty applications for its first scholarship
program. Each application was objectively scored based on the responses provided
on the scholarship application. In addition, each applicant submitted an essay that
addressed why they were an excellent candidate for the scholarship, their three
to five year plan, and how they planned to use their education for the betterment
of the sonography and healthcare community. The essays were scored anonymously by
a panel of sonographers and the scholarship recipients were selected based on their
combined total scores.
The SDMS Foundation will formally launch its 2010 grants and scholarship programs
at the 2009 SDMS Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee October 15-18. Information
and applications for 2010 grants and scholarships is also available on the SDMS
Foundation website (www.sdmsfoundation.org/programs.aspx).
Funding for the SDMS Foundation Scholarship Program relies on support from individual
SDMS members and the sonography community. Anyone interested in making a donation
to the SDMS Foundation’s efforts can donate online at:

In 2010, the SDMS Foundation Scholarship Program has been expanded to include more
scholarships and two application deadlines: January 31, 2010 and July 31, 2010.
